Fall 2008 Journalism Dept. Offerings
Department Chair: Burt Dragin/510-464-3459/burtdragin(at)aol(dot)com

We are offering three exciting courses for the Fall semester. For more details, please email the instructor.

•> Introduction to Journalism (Journalism 55) covers the basics-news story, feature story, page design, headline writing, media law and more. The class project is a feature story, which is published in a class magazine. The feature counts 25 percent of your final grade. Class meets 11-11:50 a.m. MWF.
(Instructor: Burt Dragin/burtdragin(at)aol(dot)com)

•> Newswriting (Journalism 21): An introduction to the basics of writing news and feature stories; lead, story structure, interview techniques, media law, morality and taste. Class meets 6-8:50 p.m. Mondays.
(Instructor: Scott Strain/sastrain(at)peralta(dot)edu)

•> Newspaper production (Journalism 18ABCD) puts out the (award-winning) campus newspaper, the Laney Tower (print and online).

This class can be taken on campus or online.

The essence of the class is getting assignments and meeting deadlines. We publish the print newspaper ever two weeks and keep the online Tower current. The class meets at noon daily but we work with students' schedules. The 18ABCD sequence indicates first time taking the class (18A), etc. This class can be taken four times for credit.

For an Associate of Arts degree in Journalism, the class must be taken three times. For students whose work I have not seen, please send me a writing sample. The best way to do this is to write a letter to the editor (250 words on any topic, any newspaper) and email it to me.
(Instructor: Burt Dragin/burtdragin(at)aol(dot)com.
