This season Laney women's volleyball coach Heather Sisneros welcomes a 400 percent increase in experience with her 2006 team.
Last season, the 0-15 Eagles had two players with substantial volleyball experience; this season the number is eight on the 13-player team.
"We have a couple of players who have played club volleyball," Sisneros said, naming Wing Sum, who played club ball in China, and Lajuanda Asemota, who was on a club team in Texas.
Couple these players with setter Louise Nerona from talent-rich St. Joseph Notre Dame High and one gets the feeling there could be a couple of wins in Laney's future.
The Eagles open their season at home against Napa on Sept. 29.
"That team tried hard and improved," Sisneros said of last year's squad. "What was more important was that we let the volleyball community know we had a team and we had opportunities for girls to come here and play. We made connections and I believe we are seeing the results.
"Can we win? I think we have the potential to surprise a couple of teams."
Laney's first match of the season is Friday, Sept. 29, when it plays host to Napa Valley College at 6:30 p.m.
