Lyndon Johnson was in the White House, Edmund G. "Pat" Brown was in the Governor's Mansion, and John H. Reading was wherever the Mayor of Oakland lived at that time.
The year was 1966.
It was also the year that the Laney College football team, in only its second year of existence, won the mythical junior college national championship after defeating the O.J. Simpson-led City College of San Francisco Rams in the Prune Bowl on Dec. 3 of that year at Spartan Stadium in San Jose.
It remains the biggest victory in Laney College football history.
Now the players from that 1966 team are invited back, back to Laney College Stadium for a halftime reunion when the Eagles play host to College of the Siskiyous on Friday, Oct. 13, in the homecoming game.
Actually, the planned festivities do not just include the game. There will be a pre-game social hour held at The Warehouse in Oakland (402 Webster Street) at 2:30 p.m. and then a post game get-together will be held at the same spot - after a victory, hopefully.
But the festivities need players from that 1966 team to make it all work and here is the important information part of the story: Contact Ed Johnson at (559) 432-5491 or former Laney football coach Stan Peters at (925) 443-8217 to indicate interest.
The more players show up, the merrier time it will be for all involved.
