Spring has just about sprung for the spring sports at Laney College with the spring semester rapidly coming to a close.
It that enough spring for you?
At this point in the season only one team, women's track and field still, has competition left. The Eagles will participate in the Northern California Community College finals at Sacramento City College on May 13 and in the state meet at Bakersfield College on May 19-20.
The other teams-baseball, softball and swimming-have completed their seasons, but that doesn't mean we can't recap what happened and who the outstanding individuals were on each team.
These teams were honored at the annual Spring Sports Banquet, which was held on May 10 in the Laney College Student Center.
Baseball
The Eagles finished the season with an 8-19 record in the Bay Valley Conference and were 12-28 overall. They finished sixth in the BVC and defeated rival Contra Costa College in three out of four games. They won their final game 10-7 over Mendocino on May 6 at College of Alameda. Catcher Derek Wolf had three doubles and drove in five runs in the victory.
Team MVP Jonathan Lewis went 4-for-4 in the game and finished the year with a team-high .341 batting average. He also was second in RBI with 24 (Joel Rayford had 26) and finished with three triples and two home runs. He also had a team-high of 31 runs scored.
Pitcher of the year was Jason Francis, who was the team's most consistent winner. Francis was 4-2 on the season with a team-best 3.70 ERA. He had the team's only two complete games.
The most inspirational player award went to freshman pitcher Renato Lopez.
Softball
The softball team finished the season with an overall record of 7-29 and was 4-20 in the Bay Valley Conference, with all four victories coming against Contra Costa College.
Vanessa Castro was picked for the All-BVC second team, finishing the season as the Eagles top hitter with a .360 average in conference and had a team-high 27 hits and 11 stolen bases.
