As of July 1, Laney College will bid farewell to President Odell Johnson and welcome President Dr. Frank Chong.
The announcement was given at the Peralta Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday, May 9. The Board voted in favor of Chong with seven 'ayes' and zero absences or abstentions.
Chong comes to us from Mission College in Santa Clara, where he held the position of president for three years and worked on "tapping as many resources as possible."
"I like to snoop around," Chong said, "and I am very research oriented so I will fight for Laney to get its due resources."
Chong is also a "big proponent" of shared governance. "The best ideas come from students, faculty and staff," he said, "because they are the ones we are here to serve."
As for what he thinks of the campus press, Chong offered with a laugh, "I like it when they write good stuff about me," he said, "but I do believe that the college campus should be a place where students practice free speech. Students should challenge the process as well as the authority."
Seems like Chong is ready to strike up a friendship with the Tower.
