Laney President Odell Johnson was presented the First Amendment Award "for recognition of extraordinary administrative support for a journalism program" at the Peralta trustees' meeting April 25.
Johnson was selected by the Journalism Association of Community Colleges for the honor.
"I nominated Odell for his unwavering support for freedom of the press at Laney College, plus his long-time support for the journalism program," said Laney Tower adviser Burt Dragin at presentation.
"On occasion," Dragin said, "the Tower has run stories that are not always favorable to the administation but Odell Johnson has always been firm in his support of a free press."
