It is the beginning of April and some of us have already started to forget about the resolutions that we set only four months ago. A goal for some was to get better grades, for others it was to save money and for others it was to get in shape.
"The number one myth is a question that is constantly asked, how do I get rid of this spot?" said Heather Sisneros, the Head Coach for the Women's volleyball team at Laney College. "There is no such thing as spot reduction," she stressed.
"There are no pills, no fads and no fast ways to make you healthier," shared Sisneros, "it is going to take sweat and hard work, the old fashioned way."
In a continuing effort to improve facilities for students, staff and the community, Laney College has embarked on several renovation projects including upgrading the swimming pool and adding new bleachers and restroom facilities to the recently built Athletic Stadium. A new fitness center located at C102 has also been developed.
The official opening day for the new center at Laney College is scheduled for Monday, April 17, the day after students return from Spring Break. The fitness center will be open from 6:00am-10:00pm Monday-Thursday, Friday from 6: 00am-7:00pm and Saturday from 7: 00am-3:00pm. All of the supervisors are instructors from the college, so a qualified, personal trainer is always on hand.
The services are available for all Laney College students, but the students must participate in an orientation before they can use the center.
"With a variety of new equipment in the center, the cardio equipment is the piece gaining priority," said Sisneros. "Even with 13 pieces available someone is always exercising on the cardio equipment."
While staff played a strong role, the influence from administration was also a powerful key.
"Many students and staff have expressed to our physical education faculty the need for an upgrades fitness center facility," said Johnson, "the physical education faculty brought this need to the attention of the administration and we were able to secure Bond Measure E funds to complete the project in time for spring classes."
