LaneyWorks puts students to work

A wonderful opportunity for becoming employed and self-sufficient is available through the California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKS) program at Laney College (LC), also known as LaneyWorks. Students who are receiving benefits from CalWORKS or Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF) are eligible for many supportive services which empower them to enter the workforce with the skills and work ethic that are necessary for success in today's workplace.

One in three students drops out of high school in the Oakland Unified School District. (OUSD) According to data prepared 10/15/08 by California Department of Education, OUSD dropout rate for the 2006/07 school year was a staggering 35.9%. To address this epidemic, OUSD has partnered with the Gateway to College program to provide an avenue for at-risk youth aged 16 to 20 to receive their high school diploma.

Having read The Pursuit of Happyness, the autobiography on which the 2006 Will Smith movie was based, the students in Helen Harris's basic English class wrote the author, Chris Gardner, letters of appreciation. Their letters paid off big-time: in response, Gardner invited the whole class to be his guests at a downtown Oakland gala dinner on January 31 where he was to be the featured speaker.

Fox Theater's grand opening night

The spotlight has been lit on Oakland's premier movie house. But it is a cinema no longer. The palace has become the place to stage high-energy events. And to show how true that is the Friends of the Oakland Fox threw a grand fundraising bash that this town hasn't seen since the shuttered Kasier Convention Center was in full swing.
