In the pocket of oil companies

Editor-I was watching C-SPAN on T.V. and it had on for several days, the majority of the House Republicans, in the nation's capital, demanding that the House of Representatives come back from vacation and pass an energy bill that will not only allow offshore drilling, but also drill oil on the Arctic National Wildlife in Alaska.
People should know that these politicians are in the pockets of the oil companies.
These oil companies don't care about solving the energy crisis. Their main concern is profit. For several months, the oil companies have made several commercials on T.V., distorting the public that oil drilling in these places is necessary to solve the problem of high gas prices. So, it is not surprising that the American people voted in support of offshore drilling and drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife in a recent poll.
The majority of the American people need to know that the Arctic National Wildlife is home of the Gwich'in people who live their own way of life there. They take care of the animals and preserve water.
I hope that the majority of the American people don't support destroying the Gwich'in's homeland in favor of oil so that the gas prices will come down.

Editor-I came to Laney by way of a scholarship program offered by Reach Fellowship in Oakland. I am a student fulfilling a dream to return to school after many career changes and diverse circumstances.
As I look around the Laney campus I realize this is a second chance for many people including myself, as well as a wonderful opportunity for our younger society seeking a path of success.
I want to congratulate the many students and staff for their welcoming spirit, their smiles, and their eagerness to help an overwhelmed new student that couldn't read the map to the "A" building. A standing ovation is indeed in order for your assistance.
I would like to wish all of you at Laney that you reach your academic goals with ease and confidence. And remember, a little kindness can change a person's destiny and bring peace to the many who cross his path.
