To inform the students of Laney College of what resources, programs and services are available to them, Student Activities Advisor Algeria Kirven and the Associated Students of Laney College (ASLC) organized the Laney Welcome Back Bash.
As students walked onto the quad of Laney College on Aug. 26 and Aug. 28, representatives of various organizations and student services welcomed them.
Among the various organizations that were available to join for new and returning students included Living Strong-an Asian Christian club, Value-Creating Buddhist Club. Flyers and representatives were also promoting volunteer opportunities for James Oliver Community Writing Center, Writer Coach Connection, and Oakland Asian Student Educational Services (OASES) among others. All vendors offered a learning environment geared toward student growth and success.
In front of the gymnasium students could find AC Transit representatives, including former Student Trustee and Tower Editor-in-Chief Reginald James, promoting the new program named "EasyPass." The pass allows unlimited travel for Peralta students who are taking 12 units or more and would pay a $50 fee per semester.
Special Election for ASLC President
An ASLC Special Presidential election will be held on Oct. 28-29 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Any student with 2.0 GPA or higher and 50 student signatures can run for student body president.
Students with student I.D. can vote for their candidate.

To the left of AC Transit, the ASLC handed out flyers for the Laney College Election Calendar as well as discussed the Laney College Fall '08 Special Student Body Election, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 6p.m. Oct 28 and 29.
Moreover, as students walked through the quad listening to the music playing in the background, they could grab chicken and pork tamales as well as vegetarian egg rolls.
They could also sign up for 24 Hour Fitness, a checking or savings account with Wells Fargo and apply for scholarships through Phi Theta Kappa-an honor society specifically for the two-year college.
To top it off, the ASLC held a raffle that would allow four students to walk away with gift cards to the bookstore and two others with Laney College t-shirts.
Essentially, with the efforts of Laney College Public Information Officer Eliza Chan and others, students were greeted to the Laney Welcome Back Bash with balloons, ribbons, signs, food, music, and a raffle, ultimately "a feel good event," says Kirven.
