Moreover, to qualify for a ballot, a student must collect a minimum of 50 valid signatures of current students and submit these to the Student Activities Office, room 414 Student Center. A candidate must also be in good standing, not on academic probation, financial aid probation, and/or library hold. The candidate must attend the mandatory candidates' meeting.
After a student has completed the process that meet all of the requirements for presidency, the election committee will hold candidate forums, produce a voter guide, and hold a candidates' meeting that provides the various rules and regulations for candidates.
Should a student have any questions or would like to obtain more information, contact Vice President of Student Services and Advisor of the Elections Committee Dr. Donald Moore in room 411 of the Student Center.
Due to alleged violations of the Community College District Student Elections Code last spring, this special student body election for presidency is being held.
The May 22 Laney Tower issue states "Publicity Commissioner Xing Xu bested Reza Mohajerinejad (Nejad) for the position of ASLC president by a mere 160 to 140." In response to the results of the election, "Nejad, in an open letter to Student Activities advisor Algeria Kirven on May 9, requested a recount of the votes in light of irregularities surrounding the elections."
Thus, in May, the elections committee overturned the results of the election based on irregularities in the voting process. After careful consideration, the Elections Committee decided to declare the office of ASLC president vacant. In the meantime, Vice-President Mario Villegas has been taking on the responsibilities as acting student body president.
While irregularities may have taken place and discrepancies identified, Elections Committee Chair Evan Zhou says, "This special election is neutral and fair. It is open to all Laney College students. The next president will be the voice of the students and will be able to work through the issues that arise."
