The College of Alameda women's volleyball team boasts a squad made up of a number of high school stars. Captains Assata Harris (Berkeley High) and Ki'Osha Jones (Fremont) both played varsity volleyball at their respective schools.
Nailah Jordan played varsity volleyball at Encinal High and was featured as a Player of the Week in the Oakland Tribune in October, 2008.
Jones ranks fifth and eighth respectively in aces and blocks in the Bay Valley Conference. Harris is second in aces and fifth in kills; Kyoko Ohtaka, an international student from Tokyo, ranks ninth in the BVC.
Alameda defeated Laney College 3-1 on September 23 under head coach Linda Thompson and assistant coach Lisa Busbee-Young. When asked about the recent loss to Contra Costa, Harris said: "We have a lot of potential and we can bring it if we focus, we didn't bring the fire".
Despite the recent losses, Thompson believes that her team, thanks to good recruiting will improve its winning percentage over last season. Practices are strenuous and the team keeps pushing to improve each day.
"I'm glad to be on the team and be coached by coach Thompson and coach Young," Jones said, "because they are really good coaches and I am really happy to be able to continue playing in college."
Thompson still believes that "success is going to be measured by how we play teams such as Napa College and Solano college and so far we have done well against them. We have to stay focused and when the dust settles, our goal is the be in the middle of the pack."
