If you're still unclear about what's going on with the budget cuts to education, or about how to get involved, then the teach-in at Berkeley City College on Nov. 7 would be a great source of information.
A teach-in is basically an organized gathering for people to discuss an important issue, and an opportunity to educate others about that issue and ways of addressing it. In this case, the issue is the state budget cuts.
It's a good first step to getting involved. You don't have to know a lot about what's going on--all you need is a desire to learn and participate. This is a place for questions to be asked, so don't be shy or embarrassed.
Here's what you can expect from the teach-in next week. It starts at 10:00 a.m., but if you go a little early there will be coffee and pastries. You can ask some questions about the teach-in if you like, or just get to know someone.
Things will officially start in the auditorium with a few people coming up and explaining the purpose of the teach-in. This will give you some background on current events and an overall impression of the day's agenda.
Then there will be presentations from various community colleges on their budgets along with a Q & A session, so you'll get a glimpse of what's happening at other schools.
Afterwards, lunch will be provided by the BCC Associated Students, though it's important that you RSVP.
After lunch, everyone will break off into smaller groups to discuss different aspects of organizing against the state cuts. You'll be able to choose what group interests you most.
Some of the groups will focus on how to organize a club at your own school, or how to design and create banners to get out the message. Others will be staff- or faculty-specific issues.
At the end, everyone will come back together to discuss organizing for the statewide protest planned for March 4. If you don't know what that is, you will by the end of the day.
Get there early and use public transportation as parking will be impacted by the Cal game.
Come for the food, stay for your education.
